Lifestyle Newborn Sessions: What They Are, What to Expect and How to Prepare.

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life's most beautiful seasons and one that passes far too quickly.

Lifestyle newborn sessions are designed to capture those fleeting early days in a natural, relaxed way. Rather than focusing on heavily posed images or elaborate props, these sessions tell the story of your growing family exactly as you are: cuddling on the couch, rocking your baby in the nursery, admiring tiny fingers and toes, and soaking in all the love that comes with a new little one.

If you've booked a lifestyle newborn session (or are considering one), here's everything you need to know.

What Is a Lifestyle Newborn Session?

A lifestyle newborn session takes place in the comfort of your own home and focuses on genuine connection and emotion.

Unlike a traditional posed newborn session, there is no pressure for baby to sleep the entire time or stay in a specific position. Instead, we'll follow your baby's lead and capture authentic moments between you and your family.

Some of my favorite images come from:

  • Snuggling together on the bed

  • Feeding and soothing baby

  • Quiet moments in the nursery

  • Sibling interactions

  • Tiny details like eyelashes, fingers, toes and baby curls

  • Genuine laughter and connection

The result is a collection of timeless images that feel personal, meaningful and uniquely yours.

When Should We Schedule Our Session?

Lifestyle newborn sessions are typically photographed within the first 2–6 weeks after birth.

Unlike posed newborn photography, there is no strict deadline. Whether your baby is 10 days old or 6 weeks old, we can still create beautiful images.

The most important thing is that you're feeling physically ready and comfortable.

What Should We Expect During the Session?

The session is intentionally relaxed and baby-led.

Newborns often need feeding breaks, diaper changes, cuddles and time to settle. That's completely normal and expected.

There is no rush.

I allow plenty of time so everyone can stay relaxed and comfortable throughout the session.

A typical lifestyle newborn session includes:

  • Family photos

  • Individual parent-and-baby portraits

  • Sibling photos

  • Baby-only portraits

  • Nursery photos (if desired)

  • Detail images of your newborn

Many parents worry that their baby won't cooperate. The truth is, babies don't need to "perform" for beautiful photographs. Whether your baby is sleeping, awake, stretching, feeding or being cuddled, those moments are all part of your story.

How to Prepare Your Home

The good news? You do not need a perfectly clean or magazine-worthy home for beautiful newborn photos.

As a parent of a newborn, you already have enough on your plate. Please don't spend your precious energy stress-cleaning before I arrive.

For lifestyle newborn sessions, I typically only need a few small areas with good natural light. Often a space near a window in the primary bedroom, nursery, living room or even a simple blank wall. I've photographed in homes of all sizes and have plenty of experience working around everyday clutter and lived-in spaces.

If you'd like to do anything before the session, simply open blinds and curtains to let in as much natural light as possible.

I also recommend keeping your home a little warmer than usual on the day of your session. Babies are often happiest when they're cozy, especially if we'll be photographing them in a diaper, swaddle or simple outfit.

Most importantly, don't worry about creating a "perfect" home. These photos are about your family, your connection and this beautiful season of life, not whether there are dishes in the sink or laundry waiting to be folded.

Preparing Baby

A few simple things can help the session run smoothly:

  • Feed baby shortly before the session begins if possible.

  • Dress baby in a simple outfit that's easy to remove.

  • Have extra diapers, wipes, pacifiers and bottles nearby if you use them.

  • Don't worry if baby is fussy. We have plenty of time and can pause whenever needed.

The goal isn't perfection. The goal is preserving this season of life exactly as it is.

What Should Baby Wear?

Simple is always best.

I recommend:

  • Neutral-colored sleepers

  • Soft knits

  • Simple onesies

  • Swaddles in cream, beige, ivory, soft gray, dusty blue, muted green or blush tones

Try to avoid:

  • Bright colors

  • Large logos

  • Busy patterns

  • Character clothing

  • Neon colors

Timeless clothing helps keep the focus on your baby and the emotions in the images.

What Should Parents Wear?

Neutral and soft tones photograph beautifully and create a timeless look.

Great options include:

  • Cream

  • Beige

  • Ivory

  • Taupe

  • Soft gray

  • Dusty blue

  • Sage green

  • Soft earth tones

For Moms:

  • Flowy dresses

  • Knit sweaters

  • Comfortable tops with soft textures

  • Clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable

For Dads:

  • Neutral henleys

  • Knit sweaters

  • Button-up shirts

  • Plain t-shirts in soft, neutral colors

Try to avoid:

  • Neon colors

  • Busy patterns

  • Large logos

  • Athletic wear

  • Matching outfits

Instead of matching exactly, coordinate colors and tones.

What Should Siblings Wear?

For siblings, simple and comfortable clothing works best.

Great options include:

  • Neutral dresses

  • Linen outfits

  • Knit sweaters

  • Simple shirts and pants

  • Bare feet whenever possible

Children photograph best when they're comfortable and free to move naturally.

What If My Older Children Don't Cooperate?

This is one of the biggest concerns parents have and one of the things you don't need to worry about.

I don't expect young children to sit still and smile perfectly.

We'll play, cuddle, explore and keep things fun. Often the most meaningful photographs happen when children are simply being themselves.

The goal is connection, not perfection.

What If My Baby Cries?

Babies cry.

Babies need feeding breaks.

Babies need cuddles.

All of that is completely normal.

We'll move at your baby's pace and take breaks whenever needed. There is no pressure and no expectation that everything goes perfectly.

Some of the most beautiful images happen during those quiet moments of comforting and soothing your little one.

A Final Note

The newborn stage is incredibly short.

The sleepless nights, tiny stretches, milk-drunk smiles, baby yawns and endless cuddles may feel ordinary right now but one day they'll become some of your most treasured memories.

My goal is to preserve this chapter honestly and beautifully so you can remember not only what it looked like but what it felt like.

I can't wait to help tell your family's story.
